Human development in Sumatera Utara continues to progress. In 2019, the Sumatera Utara Human Development Index (HDI) reaches 71.74. This figure increased by 0.56 points or grew by 0.79 percent compared to 2018.

Babies born in Sumatera Utara in 2019 have hopes to live up to 68.95 years, 0.34 years longer than the previous year.

Children who are 7 years old in 2019 have the expectation of being able to enjoy education for 13.15 years, 0.01 years longer than 2018.

The population aged 25 years and over has on average been educated for 9.45 years, 0.11 years longer than the previous year.

In 2019, the people of Sumatera Utara fulfill their daily needs with an average expenditure per capita of 10.65 million rupiah per year, an increase of 258 thousand rupiah compared to the previous year.
